Emily Rose, 29, is a Pharmacist at Southmead Hospital and now also the national winner of I Love My Pharmacist 2015!
Emily was shortlisted by an expert panel to become one of 18 finalists. Thousands of members of the public then voted for their favourite pharmacist and Emily was announced as the regional winner for Southern England. The final stage saw Emily, along with five other regional winners meet with the judging panel to determine the eventual winner of I Love My Pharmacist 2015.
Emily has been working at Southmead Hospital for 5 years and was chosen by the judges as this year’s winner due to her outstanding contribution to rheumatoid arthritis care. She has designed a new pathway for appropriate prescribing and monitoring of arthritis medication to ensure patients are getting the treatment that is right for them. Emily spotted many problems with the old service, and set to solve them with the new process- she also aimed to improve patient safety ensuring all patients are followed up on a regular basis.
Emily put in a significant amount of extra time and effort outside working hours to make this new patient experience possible, and as a result saves the NHS £200,000 a year in ongoing efficiency savings, as well as impacting positively on patient outcomes.
On being announced as the winner Emily said: “I am thrilled to be the winner of ‘I Love My Pharmacist 2015’. The entire competition has had such a positive impact on the workplace and I could not have got this far without the support of the hospital staff and patients as they motivate us to make these service changes. I’m overwhelmed that so many people took the time out of their day to vote for me. Being the winner is a real honour; we go the extra mile on a daily basis for our patients and it is nice to have some recognition for all our hard work”.
On Emily being the winner Alistair Burt, Minister of State for Pharmacy said: “I would like to extend huge congratulations to Emily for winning amongst such a talented field. Pharmacists are a major resource for our health service and they do a fantastic job, helping people to manage their health and stay well”.
Charlotte Leslie MP added: “I was absolutely delighted to hear that Southmead Hospital Pharmacist Emily Rose won the National “I Love My Pharmacist Award” this year. After my visit just weeks before I have absolutely no doubt that the award is thoroughly deserved and I’m so pleased all her hard work has managed to gain some plaudits. Well done Emily!”
